What it’s Like to Be A Copywriter at Ecreative
Being a copywriter can mean a lot of different things, depending on where you work. I’m sure that when I tell people what I do, they envision one of two things: Someone hunched over their keyboard and typing feverishly to meet a deadline or a Mad Men type of scenario where I’m sipping whiskey and chatting with my coworkers about our next big pitch.
The first scenario is more accurate than the latter, though us copywriters do joke about converting a corner of our little writing nook into a lounge area with a small sofa and wet bar. You know, to help spark our creativity. I’m kidding…mostly.
In all seriousness, when it’s month-end and we have a long list of projects quickly approaching their deadlines, you hear nothing but the clicking of our keyboards as we tear through projects. It gets a bit crazy at times, but that’s also what makes my job fun.
B2B Copywriters: Part Wordsmith, Part Research Wizard
So, what exactly does a copywriter do at an industrial marketing agency? I’ll start by saying that our work isn’t exactly glamorous, but it’s important. At Ecreative, we’re all about helping industrial companies sell their products and services. What kind of products, you ask? Well, it varies.
Skillsets for B2B Industrial Copywriters
Our clients sell everything from custom fasteners to the tiny fans that prevent MRI equipment from overheating. We get a lot of variety, which keeps things interesting. Again, it’s not as fancy as writing the next ad for Tesla, but it gives you a newfound appreciation for all the work that goes into manufacturing products.
B2B copywriting also makes me wish I had an engineering/physics/some kind of math and science degree because man, some of the research I comb through makes my brain hurt.
Like, when I Google “how to calculate pressure gain” for a page about pressure instrumentation. I mean, wow. If you know how to interpret this, I’ll promise to be your friend forever.

But I digress. Anyway, here it is: the answer to what I do in a typical today.
Taking Advantage of Morning Productivity
After sending that off, I combed through two pages of content I wrote for a company that sells radiation shielding products. You know, the doors, walls, and windows that doctors and nurses stand behind when you’re getting an x-ray or radiation therapy. I checked everything for grammar, then read through the copy again to make a few more tweaks to my sections. And, done. Man, I’m feeling productive!
Writing High-Quality SEO Content for B2B Industrial Clients
Now it’s time to start a new task, so I start working on content for a company that manufactures bottle leak testing equipment. I told you there was a lot of variety in what we do! Here, I work a bit of keyword magic and restructure content and page layout to improve flow and readability. The goal, as it is with most of the work I produce, is to create scannable content that informs prospective customers and uses the right phrases to boost search engine results.
Food time! Most of us go to lunch at 11:00 a.m. or so. It might seem early, but our brains need that fuel (and more coffee) to push through the long afternoon. After my lunch break, it’s time to proofread a blog written by a coworker. It’s a nice break from working on my projects and helps me ease into the second half of my day.
Wrapping Up the Day with Fun Projects
I spend the rest of the afternoon working on copy for a label company. I love this site because of its “punny” headers. I want to keep their branding and voice, so I add a few headers of my own and incorporate keywords throughout for balanced optimization.
Now it’s 4:30 p.m., and my creativity is basically depleted, so I use my remaining time to work on this blog post. What a day!
Things were clicking along for me today, but that’s not always the case. Here’s the thing. Writing doesn’t always come naturally, even for writers! We jokingly call our little nook of the office ‘The Writers’ Block’ for this very reason.
