What Are H2, H3’s, H4’s, and Why Are They Important for UX and SEO?
H2’s, H’3, and H’4s to be put simply are just headers that give information titles. As a user you can usually identify them because they are bigger than the rest of the text and sometimes a different color, font, or weight. Before learning about web design and SEO (search engine optimization) I would have assumed they were there just for visual appeal but that is certainly not the case!
Header Basics
Before getting too technical, let us start from the beginning.
H1’s
The title of any web page should be coded as and H1. As far as on page optimizations go H1’s carry the most influence in googles (or other search engines) eyes. H1’s are where you should have your best keywords and how to communicate with your users what the page will be discussing. You can only have 1 h1 so you better make the most of it! So if this blog is about H2’s, H3’s, and H4’s why are we talking about H1’s? H1’s are simply the most important following with h2s, then h3s and so on.
What can H2’s, H3’s, H4’s do?
- Emphasize and create importance for keywords
- Communicate with search engines what the page is about
- Create visual appeal
- Create hierarchy
- Label sections- make scannable
Why are headers important for SEO
SEO (search engine optimization) revolves around optimizing websites for search engines. There are a ton of variables the search engines take into account for ranking factors and where organically websites end up on SERP’s (search engine result pages). Headers are one of those ranking factors! Mentioned previously H1’s hold the most importance when it comes to Search engines, then h2’s, 3’s and so on. Headers should include keywords and phrases that you believe best represent your webpage and that have search volume. Search volume is an estimate of the number of searches of keywords per month.
Why are header important for UX
UX, otherwise known as user experience, is a branch in SEO that helps a user’s experience while using a website or web page. Headers are key for UX! Headers help organize your information by creating hierarchy and structure.Structure is created by sorting information into related groups and then titling the information by adding headers. For example the blog your reading right now has headers that explain what the section you're about to read is about. This also helps when users are skimming a page for a specific tidbit of information. Lastly, the obvious one is that headers can help create visual appeal by adding different fonts/colors and help break up the content so you are not starting at a giant wall of text.
